Bitchy Barn Swallow Employees

WTF? I realize they have to be on their guard so that merchandise doesn’t walk out the door (as if they’d notice anyway) but why does the help at the Barn Swallow have to be so crabby? It is still my favorite store in all of Okoboji but the people behind the counter always seem to be having a bad day. I’ve even tried saying something amazingly positive about the store but my comments are usually met with arrogance and impatience. So I then find myself wondering if the employees hate their jobs or just have an air of superiority toward us boji rats who bring our children to see the kitties.

Last Weekend of the Season

There is always one weekend that I don’t look forward to at the lake. Aside from the work involved in taking the boat out of the water, cleaning out the condo fridge and packing up everything, it’s just depressing to know the summer is over. Now, most people think of the summer as over on Labor Day Weekend, but we still like to have a last hurrah then.

Saturday morning we decided to met up with some Sioux Falls friends: Heather, who is my neighbor, her mom, Linda, and Heather’s son, Jacob. They don’t come to Okoboji often so we were eager to show them a good time. The weather was a little chili on the water, so we piled blankets and towels in the boat.

Our friends were staying at Village West so we boated over there for a great brunch the girls cooked for us. From there we showed them the Harbor and then off to The Barefoot Bar. We spent a couple hours there before heading back to our condo. I wanted to show them The Barn Swallow and that took another hour so we were ready for dinner after that. The girls took The Man’s truck back to their time-share to get ready and by 8 we were ready to go.

Geppettos was our choice for the evening since we wanted to show our friends the finer side of Boji. The Kid and my friend’s kid were a little tired and consequently they were a it fidgety during dinner. The restaurant wasn’t very busy so I don’t think any other diners noticed. Our meal was fine but it was obvious that the season is over since the list of “out of stock” menu items was longer than the available ones.

After dinner, Heather’s mom offered to watch the kids so we could go out. The music from Captain’s was sounding pretty good from the street so we decided to stop there for a drink. The Fishheads were playing 70s and 80s and for some old white guys, they sounded awesome!

Stories will be told for years to come about that night…

Okoboji Attire

I was cleaning out my dresser the other day and I realized I have as many “okoboji” clothing items as I do “Harley Davidson.” For years, I’ve had a special drawer and closet shelf for my Harley clothes, but I didn’t know I had this many Boji clothes. I think most of them say “Barefoot Bar” on them. I probably should just leave them at the condo so I don’t have to pack anything when I go there. I haven’t checked out the new Okoboji Harley Davidson yet. I’m sure I will drop a house payment at that place.

The Barn Swallow

With this crappy weather wewoke up to this morning, at least The Kid and I got time today to see the kitties at The Barn Swallow (although the poor things were trying to hide from an assortment of rambunctious children.) The Man, being terribly allergic, waited outside while we enjoyed the crooks and crannies of the amazing place. If you’ve never been to The Barn Swallow, I assure you it will be time well spent. It is hard to describe and the best I can do is say it is an old building (Kind of like an old farmhouse) consisting of many levels of interesting novelties that you won’t find anywhere else. The most amazing thing about the place is I swear there is not one square inch of empty space. I thought outloud of how it must be a nightmare to dust and an employee turned around and said “no shit!.” Anyway, there are lots of knooks and crannies for stray and adoptable kitties to hide from people. I bet the owners send up a prayer whenever there is a child-cat chase through the place. – not necessarily for the cats but for the more fragile of the store’s valuables.
